Slide 2-3. Petrocalcic Paleargid. Red Desert Soil. Location: Southern New Mexico. Parent Material: basin floor, alluvial sediments. Horizons and Depths: A 0-5 cm (0-2"); BA 5-20 cm (2-8"); Bt 20-30 cm (8-12"); Btk 30-38 cm (12-15"); Bkm1 38-74 cm (15-29"); Bkm2 74-102 cm (29-40"). This soil supports a vegetation of black grama (Bouteloua eriopoda), snake-weed (Gutierrezia sarothrae), mesquite (Prosopis juliflora), and yucca (Yucca elata). Note the lamellae and trowelled surfaces in the upper part of the petrocalcic (Bkm1) horizon. the scale is in feet (30cm).
