WSSS 2013 Annual Meeting Information

2013 Meeting of the Western Soil Science Society
University of Arizona - Tucson
July 22-23, 2013


The WSSS Annual Meeting was condensed and held July 22-23, 2013, at the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona and included two field trips. The first field trip was a half day tour of the unique Biosphere 2 facility and the newly commissioned Landscape Evolution Observatory (LEO; on Monday afternoon, July 22.  The second field trip was a five-six hour tour across the elevation/climate gradient of the Santa Catalina Mountains just outside of Tucson that span ecosystems ranging from desert scrub to mixed conifer forests.  The field tour examined the ongoing research and facilities of the Jemez River Basin – Santa Catalina Mountain Critical Zone Observatory that is focused on understanding interactions among soils, climate, and tectonics in regulating both short and long-term critical zone evolution, on Tuesday, July 23.



Monday, July 22

9 AM - Meetings begin with oral presentations in the Marshall Building (5th floor) of the University of Arizona (coffee and light snacks provided).
12PM - Morning session concludes.
12-1PM - Lunch on your own.  There are a wide variety of restaurants located both in the Student Union and on University Ave. within walking distance.
1PM - Depart from the Student Union to Biosphere 2.
5PM  - Return to Tucson. Dinner on your own.


Tuesday, July 23

8AM - 10AM - Wrap-up of Oral Presentations and Business Meeting (with SSSA President-Elect Jan Hopmans) - Marshall Building (5th Floor)
10AM-11AM - Morning Break - Use this time to grab a lunch to-go at one of the local restaurants or at the Student Union, for the field trip.
11AM - Depart from the Student Union for the field trip to the Santa Catalina Mountains.
4 PM - Return to Tucson and Adjournment
