The Western Society of Crop Science (WSCS) and the Western Society of Soil Science (WSSS) met jointly in Fort Collins, CO on the campus of Colorado State University (CSU) from June 22 to 24, 2009. The program was highlighted by a joint plenary session on Monday, followed by oral and poster sessions, and awards for student presentations. The Plenary Session “Soils and Crops in a Changing World” featured four prominent experts in crops and soils. The plenary speakers were Drs. Paul Fixen, William Haworth, Henry Thompson and Duane Johnson

 A tour of the National Center for Genetic Resource Preservation was conducted on Wednesday morning, June 24. The

National Center for Genetic Resources Preservation, formerly known as The National Seed Storage Laboratory, expanded its mission to preserve more than just seeds and more than just plant genetic resources in 2002. NCGRP now carries the mission of preserving germplasm of all life forms that are important to US agriculture.  


Student Awards

The A.K. Dobrenz Graduate Student Award winners presented by the WSCS were:
Adam Heuberger (CSU) first place
David Favero (CSU) second place
Tori Valdez (CSU) third place
Lindsey Voigt (Montana State University) fourth place
The WSSS Outstanding Graduate Student Awards were presented for oral and poster categories. The winners for the oral paper category were:
Edwin Moshia (CSU) first place
Christopher Wenzel (Eastern Wyoming College) second place
John Nelson (Texas Tech University) third place
In the poster paper category, the awards were presented to:
Kendall DeJonge (CSU) first place
Austin Hawks (Utah State University) second place
Kathy Doesken (CSU) third place

Dr. Jay Norton (University of Wyoming), the new President of the WSSS, succeeds Dr. Raj Khosla (CSU) who served the society for the past 2 years. The branch will meet again in 2010 with the Western Society of Crop Science and the National Cooperative Soil Survey Conference, June 21-24 in Las Vegas.  Details of the meeting are being developed at this time.
