Fundamentals in Soil Science

The Soil Science Fundamentals Review Course is designed to provide an overview of the fundamental concepts in soil science: Genesis, Classification and Morphology, Physics, Chemistry, Fertility, Biology, and Land Use.  Each of the six sections will be taught for a two week period.  Instructors will use the Fundamentals Performance Objectives (POs) as a guide for discussing topics within each section, but will not go through each objective individually.  However, students are encouraged to ask questions regarding specific POs if needed.

The objective of the course is to provide the student with a formalized way to build their fundamental knowledge and skills within the different areas of soil science to enhance their professional skills and/or to prepare to take the Fundamentals of Soil Science Exam.

This course is taught via distance learning, but instructors will supplement lecture material with additional readings and practical examples to illustrate the concepts and provide practical examples of how the concepts are used in practice.  This course is not designed to teach a student how to take the Fundamentals Exam, but instead is designed to complement the students existing knowledge of soil science and help the student understand the principles behind the POs.

Fundamentals of Soil Genesis, Classification and Morphology

Soils are an integral part of ecological and agricultural systems.  Soils occur as a continuum across the landscape and their properties change in a predictable fashion both across the landscape and with depth.  An understanding of soil morphology and the spatial distribution of soil properties is critical in the land-use decision making process.  This two week course will cover topics such as soil morphology, soil forming factors, soil genesis, soil classification, soil mapping, and soil geomorphology.

Fundamentals in Soil Chemistry and Mineralogy

The chemistry of a soil is a reflection of the type of parent material that the soil formed in and as such can be distinguished on a basis of mineralogical structure and the inherent chemical characteristics and their reactions/interactions within the soil environment.  Basic concepts of the soil chemical environment will be reviewed such as bonding strength, cation exchange capacity, oxidation/reduction and pH.  Implications for management of soil chemistry will also be covered including laboratory and field techniques, fate and transport of chemicals in soils, as well as the issues associated with saline, sodic and saline-sodic soils.

Fundamentals in Soil Fertility and Nutrient Management

Soil fertility is important in considering the role that the soil plays with regard to the availability of nutrients to plants.  Availability of nutrients under different scenarios will be discussed as well as managing the availability of those nutrients in considering acidifying and liming soils, nutrient sources and fertilizers.  Appropriate sampling techniques will be reviewed along with providing an understanding of soil and plant analysis and how to best interpret the results.  Nutrient management programs are an important consideration for managers and will also be reviewed with respect to environmental concerns, effectiveness and availability of under different management techniques.

Fundamentals in Soil Biology and Ecology

Soil is a living body. As such, the living constituents of soil will be introduced including what groups of soil organisms are present (from microorganisms to macrofauna), interesting characteristics, numbers and biomass (prevalence), what they do (functional importance), and where they are (influence of the complex soil matrix). The influence of abiotic conditions on organisms and organisms' impact on their surroundings will be discussed. As nutrient cycles are driven by biochemical activities, biogeochemical cycles will be an important topic. Decomposition of organic substrates and the synthesis of and properties impacted by soil organic matter are important topics in this section. We will finish with brief coverage of practical functional applications driven by soil biology and ecology such as composting, degradation and remediation of pollutants, and water treatment.

Influences and Management of Soil Physical Properties

Soil physical properties are closely related to how water, heat, and air move through the soil profile.  This course will cover basic physical properties of soil with an emphasis on how these properties influence soil-water relationships, temperature, and aeration.  Considerations related to management will be discussed along with how these properties are influence our ability to work with the soil-plant-atmosphere system under differing conditions.  Engineering properties will also be discussed.

Fundamentals in Soil and Land Use Management

The ability to use our soil resources in any capacity depends greatly on our understanding of how the soil environment interacts and reacts to both natural and anthropogenic influences.  This two week course will focus on various aspects of soil and water management that affects our ability to maintain a healthy environment while still relying on the soil for production of food and fiber, water quality, and overall management of land resources.  Topics will include consideration of erosion and sedimentation, soil quality, wetlands, policy and regulations, and discussion of soil resources associated with land uses such as urban, forest, pasture, and agriculture.
