Erosion threatens sustainable agriculture production, crop yields, and air and water quality. This webinars series will address agents, processes, factors, and control principles for wind and water erosion; models used to predict erosion and help determine BMPS; and how the NRCS uses the models in developing conservation plans.

Erosion Basics: Factors, Processes, Types and Control Principles

Processes, types and factors affecting wind and water erosion will be discussed, especially in light of principles of erosion control. Information on the role of cropping and tillage systems, cover crops, and crop rotations as they apply to wind and water erosion control principles will be presented. The CCA will identify how to consider erosion control principles to evaluate potential best management practices.

Dr. Clay Robinson

Agronomy and Soil Science Education Manager

Clay Robinson earned BS and MS degrees from West Texas State University, with a concentration in plant science/agronomy, and a PhD in Soils from Iowa State University. He is a Certified Professional Soil Scientist and former professor who taught soil science and agronomy courses at two universities from 1992 to 2011. He worked for an environmental consulting firm before becoming the Agronomy and Soil Science Education Manager for the American Society of Agronomy and Soil Science Society of America in early 2014. He is now responsible for developing and coordinating continuing education materials for the certification programs. Clay often talked to producer groups about soil and water conservation, irrigation management, and nitrogen and phosphorus management in dryland and irrigated production systems. He also provided an introduction to soils for urban gardeners every year, and talked with more than 20,000 middle school children about the importance of soil and taking care of it so they would not be hungry, naked, homeless, and breathless.

Wind Erosion and the WEPS Model: Is it Useful?

The modules, inputs, and operating principle of the WEPS model will be presented.

The model will be applied to examples to understand how management decisions affect wind erosion. The CCA will identify how the WEPS model can be used to recommend wind erosion BMPs.

Predicting Water Erosion: RUSLE2 and WEPP

The modules, inputs, and operating principle of the RUSLE2 model will be presented.

The model will be applied to examples to understand how management decisions affect water erosion.

The WEPP model is being used in Iowa with existing soil data, crop management records, and real-time climate data to predict water erosion on the township level. This webinar will present the hows, and discuss the whys.

The CCA will identify how the WEPS model can be used to recommend wind erosion BMPs.
