Weed ID App

My name is Clay, and I am an app addict… After my wife chastised me, I uninstalled about 40 apps to get down to 158, but that number is creeping up again, especially with this series.

This webinar will highlight a plant population app and several weed ID apps. Smartphone screenshots will be used to demonstrate the usefulness of these apps.

Speaker:
Dr. Clay Robinson, PhD, CPSS, Education Manager
American Society of Agronomy, Soil Science Society of America

Clay Robinson earned BS and MS degrees from West Texas State University, with a concentration in plant science/agronomy, and a PhD in Soils from Iowa State University. He is a Certified Professional Soil Scientist and former professor who taught soil science and agronomy courses at two universities from 1992 to 2011. He worked for an environmental consulting firm before becoming the Agronomy and Soil Science Education Manager for the American Society of Agronomy and Soil Science Society of America in early 2014. He is now responsible for developing and coordinating continuing education materials for the certification programs. Clay often talked to producer groups about soil and water conservation, irrigation management, and nitrogen and phosphorus management in dryland and irrigated production systems. He also provided an introduction to soils for urban gardeners every year, and talked with more than 20,000 middle school children about the importance of soil and taking care of it so they would not be hungry, naked, homeless, and breathless.

Crop Yield Estimators for Corn, Soybean and Sorghum

The use of tablets and smart phone Apps for companies and public institutions is promoted with the goal of increasing product exposure, reaching broad audiences, and improving effectiveness in communicating news, educational materials, and support tools. This session will review a selection of tablet and smart phone Apps related to crop identification issues, nutrient, and crop production. At the end of the webinar, users will become acquainted with new AgApps that can be implemented in routinely farming operations.

Speaker:
Ignacio Ciampitti
Assistant Professor in Crop Production, Cropping Systems Specialist
Kansas State University

Dr. Ciampitti’s program is focusing on assisting agri-business professionals in selecting the best management practices for improving yields under diverse Kansas cropping systems with emphasis on corn, soybean, sorghum, winter canola and alternative.

Ignacio’s research program is focused on maximizing yield and closing yield gaps via implementing best management practices, employing review and synthesis-analyses procedures, investigating interactions between crop production factors (genotype x environment x management – G x E x M) and using new technologies (e.g., uses of UAVs for applied production problems and for identification of abiotic stresses in crops, and Apps as a tool for guiding the farmer decision making process). For the new technologies some of the on-going projects are: uses of UAVs for detecting production issues and abiotic stresses (corn and winter canola) and development of Apps for estimating yields at field-scale (sorghum and wheat –in process).
